Reinhard Klingel received his MD degree in 1985 after studies of chemistry and medicine at the
University of Mainz, Germany. The following two years he had a postdoctoral fellowship at the German
Center for Cancer Research in Heidelberg, Germany at the Institute for Virology with Prof. Dr. Harald zur Hausen.
In 1987 medical fellowship started at Departments of Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology,
Clinical Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Cardiology) all at the University of Mainz. 1993
he received his board certification for General Internal Medicine, and 1994 for Nephrology, both at the
University of Mainz. In 1995 he received his PhD (Habilitation and Venia Legendi) in the field of
General Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Mainz, and became Assistant Professor
of Medicine (General Internal Medicine and Nephrology) at the University of Mainz, Germany. This time
also included seven years of scientific cooperation with the European Concerted Action on Polycystic
Kidney Disease coordinated by the Institute for Human Genetics in Leiden, Netherlands. His clinical
activities were complemented from 1996 until 2004 with freelance practice at the Center for
Nephrology, Dialysis, and Apheresis Ingelheim, Germany.
Since 1999 he is Head of the newly founded Apheresis Research Institute in Cologne, Germany. In
2005 he became Associate Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine and Nephrology) at the
University of Mainz and he joined the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Apheresis, the official
journal of the American Society for Apheresis. In 2010 he received his board certification for Lipidology,
by Lipid-Liga (DGFF [German Society for the treatment of lipid disorders and associated
complications]), Germany.
In 2017 he joined the scientific advisory board of Lipid-Liga/DGFF.
He is current member of the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society for Nephrology,
the European Renal Association/European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA/EDTA), the
American Society for Apheresis, the International Society for Apheresis, the European Society for
Hemapheresis, the German Society for Nephrology, the German Society for Neurology, the German,
Austrian and Swiss Society for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (D-A-C-H Foundation for the
Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases), Lipid-Liga (DGFF [German Society for the treatment of lipid
disorders and associated complications]), CholCo – the German patient organization for patients with
familial hypercholesterolemia and other severe genetic lipid disorders.
